  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To induce, create & sustain community consciousness against
  10.        AIDS by continuous counselling in the suburban general practice.
  11.        METHODS: This is an effective attempt by a CBO catering maternity and
  12.        Family Planning services to women who are steady partners of industrial
  13.        labourers. The skilled and principled doctor-patient relationship are
  14.        used to develop AIDS awareness. The centre also serves as a site for
  15.        testing STD & HIV infections. 1000 people were evaluated at random
  16.        across the community of 46000 population through interview based on a
  17.        standard questionnaire. RESULTS: There is an improvement in the AIDS
  18.        awareness among women (67% in 1994 as against 28% in '93) and insistance
  19.        on condom use by their partners (32% of 14%). 91% brings disposable
  20.        needles and 73% brings disposable gloves for internal examination (PV).
  21.        Over 1000 husbands visisted the evening clinic for confidential
  22.        counselling and testing in this year. CONCLUSION: To spread the message
  23.        against AIDS in the prevention of HIV infection community can be reached
  24.        through Family Planning clinics much effectively. Separate slot (evening
  25.        clinic) full time social workers and assurance in privacy gain
  26.        confidence to HIV/AIDS related counselling.
